HANS BIOSHAFT® SYSTEM PATENT

The HANS BIOSHAFT® SYSTEM patent was developed in the early 1990's using European funding to find a low cost sustainable solution for sewage treatment plants with minimal sludge (inert biomass) yields and ease of maintenance.

The research began by using the existing floatation system deep shaft technology. The high cost and the technical difficulties to build such a deep shaft, was considered to be a very negative aspect. Therefore, BioShaft moved to simplify the process by incorporating an attached growth process through the use of a plastic media (carriers) in the shaft to proliferate the growth of biomass. Biological testing and sampling was done in the Netherlands under very low temperatures and yielded amazing results. These results solidified the research and blazed a new path in the development of wastewater technology.

Next, a complete full-scale secondary system was developed by the incorporation of a balance tank and a settlement tank. The United Kingdom patent office subsequently reviewed the design and approved the system on April 21, 2004.

The commercialization of this process started subsequent to the issuance of the patent in 2004.
